Tactus Forum for Young Composers

10/2013 Flagey – BE

Tactus offers young composers the opportunity to compose pieces for symphonic orchestra and ensemble, to rehearse in direct contact with renowned orchestras and to have their pieces premiered in well-known venues.

The fifth edition of the Young Composers’ Forum – [tactus] took place in Brussels and Mons, October 21st to 25th 2013, under the presence of maestri Jean-Paul Dessy, Kimmo Hakola, Claude Ledoux, Ann McKay, Annelies Van Parys, and Luc Van Hove.
The application period extended from March 1st 2013 to June 7th, 2013. The aim of the ‘Tactus project is to offer an opportunity to young composers to increase their understanding of what is involved in writing for a symphony orchestra.
A series of working sessions with the Brussels Philharmonic and ensemble Musiques Nouvelles was held in Belgium.  Seven composers were given the privilege of rehearsing a work or part of a work (a movement) of about 10 minutes in length with the orchestra. The working sessions will be followed by discussion in the presence of internationally renowned composers.   Lectures will also be given on various aspects of composing for a symphony orchestra. At the end of the sessions an international reading panel will select one or more works that may be included in programmes of several leading orchestras within Europe.
The sessions will end with a closing concert given by the ensemble Musiques Nouvelles in Mons, Belgium. This concert will include one or more of the works selected.
