Seminar Opus XXI 2012, Summer Academy for Composer and Performing Art Projects in Avignon
08/2012 OPUS XXI / HfMT – DE
For three days (29th – 31st of August), OPUS XXI organised a German-French Summer Academy in France, at Chartreuse de Villeneuve les Avignon, to discuss with European professionals in the field of music and culture the role and the objectives of the new academies existing In Europe.
In addition to discover and to practise the repertoire, the academy permits to the young musicians the close cooperation with composers of different generations, cultural backgrounds and various aesthetics. Based on the mixture of the participants (interpreter, tutors, young and established composers of vocal and instrumental music coming from different European nations) Opus XXI favours an educational and artistic approach to collective trans-European experimentation and musical creativity in the disciplines of composition, interpretation and improvisation. One of the most important goals is to help new founded young European ensembles for contemporary music to get established.
The goal of the seminar was to develop a new structure for the Academy 2013. This new structure resulting from the academy consists in a composer in residence , an ensemble in residence “Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin” (KNM) and a new workshop and lecture program for young composers, reflecting different aspects of their career: relationship with the publisher, developing a project, founding the funding etc.
At this occasion, a new work for string orchestra was commissioned by opus XXI to Leopold Hurt (Germany) : “Dead Reckoning” (2012)
The piece was premiered during the Klangwerktage in Hamburg (DE) on 12th October 2012. More information about the festival and the concert here.
To continue the European network OPUS XXI plans cooperation with Ulysses network partner Aldeburgh and Impuls Graz.
