Composer Exchange Program impuls – Royaumont Foundation
08/2013 Royaumont foundation – FR
For 2012/ 2013 and 2014/2015 impuls and Fondation Royaumont/Voix nouvelles in France have established an exchange program for the support of young composers of excellence.
After the first part of the project 2013 in Graz (AT) in February 2013 the second part of this exchange will take at Royaumont Foundation (FR) from 26th August to 14th September 2013:
With its pragmatic approach and position open to all aesthetics, the Voix nouvelles composition session offers an indispensable complement to academic studies.
It will enable 15 young composers, selected on the basis of scores, recordings and portfolio, to write for very particular instrumentations. Each student will have to write a 10-minute piece, the first part of which will have to be delivered before the beginning of the Composition Workshop, the second part being written in the Royaumont Abbey with the help of the teachers, during the Composition Workshop.
This course recreates the actual conditions in which composers exercise their profession –receipt of a commission, composition, rehearsals, concert performance – while mentoring the process of creation and realisation through the presence of numerous internationally recognised musicians and tutoring by three teachers whose aesthetic diversity guarantees the student’s freedom.
In 2013, Brian Ferneyhough, Fabien Lévy and Oscar Bianchi, the Namascae Lemanic Modern Ensemble under the direction of William Blank, and two assistant conductors chosen by Peter Eötvös (Elena Schwarz and Aziz Sadikovic) will lead this tuition, which is both theoretical – analysis in collective classes, supervision of the writing process in individual sessions – and practical – rehearsals assisted by tutors, tuition in the specific features of instrumental composition, help in producing the orchestral material.
The Composition Workshop will result in performances of the works by the Namascae Lemanic Modern Ensemble, during two public concerts on Saturday 14th September 2013.
Mexican Samuel Cedillo (selected in the frame of the exchange program with impuls) will be one of the 15 trainee-composers. He will write a piece for wind quintet and double bass (bassoon, saxophone, horn, trumpet, double bass), conducted, which will be presented in one of the two concerts on 14th September 2013.
